The Library provides the following services for our patrons.
Book Scan Center
A large flatbed scanner is available for use in the Adult Reference Room. Pages can be scanned into PDF, MS Word or an image file format and then saved to a USB flash drive, sent to an email address or uploaded to Google Docs all free of charge.
Book and Media Drop Box
Items may be returned to the library drop box 24/7. The blue box is located near the curb by the main entrance to the library. Items returned before the Library opens will be considered returned the previous day. Please note: Museum Passes should never be placed in the drop box!
Computers & Printers
Computers and printers are available for use in both the Adult Reference & Children’s Rooms.
Adult Reference Room
All computers have Internet access, as well as Office Suite & resume software installed on them. Patrons are given 50¢ worth of free printing per day. After that, users will be charged 10¢ per page for black & white print jobs and 25¢ per page for color print jobs.
The Children’s Room has six computers, as well as two AWE Early Literacy Stations.
- Four computers are for children in grades 3 – 6. These computers have Internet access, Office Suite software & games installed on them.
- Two computers are game computers for children in Pre-K – grade 2. These computers do not have Internet access.
- The two Early Literacy Stations are for children ages 2 – 8. They are touchscreen computers containing over 60 educational games and activities that span seven curricular areas.
Black & white and color printing are free for children in the Children’s Room.
The Library has 3 black & white copy machines available for public use. Two are located in the lobby, near the main entrance, and the third can be found in the Quiet Study area of the Adult Reference Room. Copies cost 10¢ per page. Senior Citizens that live in the W.I. School District are allowed 3 free copies per day & will be charged 10¢ per page for each copy over that amount. Please see a staff member at the Circulation Desk for assistance.
A variety of eReaders, such as the Kindle & the Nook, are available to try out and/or use in our Adult Reference Room (they may not leave the building). Please see a Librarian to sign one out.
A fax machine is located at the Circulation Desk and a library staff member can send a fax on your behalf. The fees are as follows:
• $2 for the first page – for each number dialed
• $1 for each additional page
• 5 free pages received
• 10¢ for each additional page received
Homebound Book Delivery
If you cannot physically come into the library due to temporary or permanent health conditions, and have no other way to pick up library materials, please call our Reference Desk to arrange for homebound library service. Depending on your needs, the librarians will pick out titles for you based on your interest areas. For more information on eligibility and other aspects of the program, please call the Reference Desk of the library.
Laptops are available to use in both our Adult Reference and Children’s Rooms (they may not leave the building). Please see a Librarian to sign one out.
Museum Pass Program
The library lends out museum passes that have been generously provided by the Friends of the West Islip Public Library. We currently offer W.I. cardholders (that are 18+ years old) free family passes to the following museums:
- Children’s Museum of the East End
- Cradle of Aviation
- Fire Island Lighthouse
- Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
- Long Island Children’s Museum
- The Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages
- Old Westbury Gardens
- Vanderbilt Mansion, Museum & Planetarium

iPads & Google Nexus tablets are available to try out and/or use in both our Adult Reference and Children’s Rooms (they may not leave the building). Please see a Librarian to sign one out.
Text Magnifier & Special Needs Computer
A Text Magnifier is available in the Adult Reference Room and may be used to magnify hard-to-read images. A dedicated computer with magnification & “read aloud” software installed on it is available for use, as well.
WiFi Internet Access
The library offers free wireless Internet access in our building. A password is not required to join our network.
A wireless inkjet printer is available for use with mobile devices when connected to our “Library Wifi – Ref” wireless network. Users will be charged 10¢ per page for black & white print jobs and 25¢ per page for color print jobs – there is no free printing allowance when using this printer. Print jobs can be picked up and paid for at the Circulation Desk.
